The typical interface between a person and a computer is basically a PC. To access a central data storage like a database requires a connection to the database. A typical connection is called a Local Area Network or LAN. The LAN must connect to a Local Server. Advances in communication hardware and software has expanded this technology to Wide Area Networks or WAN and the internet. Regardless of size or area coverage, some form of connection must be available. Typically connections of an individual is through a local server, which, in turn, connects to remote servers. The local server centralizes all communication to the remote server which simplifies things somewhat. A Local server is almost always a dedicated server, since a lot of traffic passes through it.

Access to the internet also requires connection to a local server, typically the server at the service provider called a gateway. Through it, access to all servers attached to the web is available. Because of these technologies, databases are no longer limited to local systems. This allows systems like a virtual private server available to clients. Similar systems like malaysia dedicated server options are offered by DSE.
